UPCOMING BOARD VACANCIES

RN Nursing Practice Position

One RN practice position will be available on the Board of Nursing as of January 1, 2010.  Ms. Patricia LeCroy, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer of Gadsden Regional Medical Center completes her second term as of December 31, 2009 and is not eligible for reappointment.

RN Nursing Education Position

One RN nursing education position will be available on the Board of Nursing as of January 1, 2010.  Dr. Debra Davis, Dean of the College of Nursing, University of South Alabama, completes her second term as of December 31, 2009 and is not eligible for reappointment.

Advanced Practice Nursing Position

One advanced practice nursing position will be available on the Board of Nursing as of January 1, 2010.  Michael Harper, BA, CRNA, JD, current President of the Board, is not seeking reappointment once he completes his first term.

How to Apply:

Any registered nurse who is interested in applying for one of the positions should complete the application and mail in to the Alabama State Nurses Association no later than July 31, 2009.  The law requires that two names per pending vacancy be provided to the Governor so there is a need for a minimum of two names from nursing practice, two from nursing education, and two from advanced practice.

Specific Requirements for RN Board members are:

Each person appointed to the board as a licensed professional nurse shall be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of Alabama and shall have these additional qualifications: be a graduate of a state-approved educational program for the preparation of practitioners of professional nursing; be a currently licensed professional nurse in Alabama; have a minimum of five years' successful nursing experience in an administrative, teaching, clinical capacity, or advanced practice and be actively engaged in professional nursing in this state immediately preceding and during appointment. 

 

Application

 

LPN Position through LPNAA

Another impending vacancy is that of Ms. Maggie Hopkins, LPN.  The position is nominated by LPNAA.  Ms. Hopkins is eligible for reappointment. 

How to Apply:

Those interested in the LPNAA position should contact Davied Fagan at (256) 974-0123.  The law requires that two names per pending vacancy be provided to the Governor so there is a need for a minimum of two LPN names to be presented to the Governor.

Specific Requirements for PN Board members are:

Each person appointed to the board as a licensed practical nurse shall be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of Alabama and shall have these additional qualifications:  hold a diploma from an accredited high school or its equivalent; be a graduate of a state-approved vocational educational program for the preparation of practitioners of licensed practical nursing; be a currently licensed practical nurse in Alabama; have a minimum of five years' successful nursing experience and be actively engaged in licensed practical nursing in this state immediately preceding and during appointment.

Consumer Position

There will also be a consumer vacancy as of January 1, 2010.  Mr. Harry I. Brown, Jr. will complete his first term and he is eligible for reappointment.  The consumer position is not nominated by any particular group and is appointed by the Governor. 

How to Apply

Any consumer that meets the requirements who is interested in serving should express an interest to the Governor.

Specific Requirements for the Consumer member are:

The consumer member of the board shall have, presently or formerly, no direct financial interest in any health care facility, profession, agency, or insurer, or be or have been a health care worker. 

Board members attend one to two day meetings in Montgomery each month.  Meetings are scheduled in November of each year for the subsequent calendar year.  Board members are issued laptop computers and receive Board meeting information on flash drives.  An orientation occurs once the Governor appoints the new members.  Feel free to contact Genell Lee, Executive Officer, at 334-242-4184 or via electronic mail at Genell.Lee@abn.alabama.gov for specific questions about the time commitments.  Any questions related to the process for RN positions should be directed to the Alabama State Nurses Association, 334-262-8321 or alabamasna@bellsouth.net.
