Nursing Students working as Nursing
Assistant or
Patient Care Technicians
I
am a nursing student but I work as a nursing assistant in the hospital.
What procedures can I do as an employee of the hospital?
A student’s role with faculty
supervision does not carry over to the role as an unlicensed employee of the
hospital when the nursing student is working as a nursing assistant or patient
care technician. Unless the nurse is a school nurse or nurse in the State of
Alabama Independent Living Program (SAIL) the rule answering this question is
found in the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code Chapter
610-X-6-.03(2e) and 610-X-g-.04(2e) which states “Tasks delegated to unlicensed
assistive personnel shall not require the exercise of independent nursing
judgment or intervention. Selected nursing functions that may not be delegated
include but are not limited to performance of invasive or sterile procedures or
administration of medications …” |
